70% of intellectually, developmentally or physically disabled individuals are unemployed in the United States”
Harold kicking off The Thoughtful Travelers, assisting people with accessible travel and blogging about his own travel and life.
Susan and Steve are married with a blended family of 5 adult children. Susan’s son Harold is 22 years old and has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. During the past 2 years as he approached “aging out” of school services, we knew things would change, and so did Harold. This understandably brought considerable anxiety for all of us about what would happen after graduation! What would he do for those 7 hours a day when the bus picks him up to when it drops him off.
Harold’s experience and journey transitioning into a vocation he is passionate about inspired Steve and Susan to start The Be Thoughtful Movement to help other families navigate this critical time in their disabled child’s life.
The Be Thoughtful Movement is about bringing awareness to the employment and transition needs of people with intellectual, developmental and/or physical disabilities. Harold’s vocation in the travel industry with The Thoughtful Travelers is unique and so far very successful. He is living with purpose, and there is excitement about what his future holds. They understand how fortunate they are for the support structure they have in place and are grateful for the abilities Harold does have that allows him to pursue his passion.
However, this is not the case for many in the special needs community in CT and across the country as budgets and services get cut. Uncertainty and anxiety is prevalent. Every individual and family is unique and faces different challenges. The Be Thoughtful Movementbelieves passionately that everyone has a gift and purpose and we hope to help individuals of all abilities find theirs as we also work to create more employment opportunities within local communities!
